We got off the train from Salzburg, stashed our suitcases, and walked around Munich for five hours. Towers, churches, fountains, a yummy lunch, more ridiculously lavish treasures and a palace. A full visit left us ready to sit for the five hour train to our next stop.
A hike to the castle, a trip deep underground to see a salt mine, a visit way up high to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, a great peaceful sleep in the Mirabel monastery. Salzburg was lovely.
We follow Rick Steve's advice so much that my sons refer to him as Uncle Rick! He often recommends some great places to stay with lots of character. In Vienna, we could see St. Stephan's Cathedral from our window. Fabulous! More evidence of Hapsburg rule (the double eagle), more over the top Hapsburg treasure - including the royal pillow! We attended Sunday mass where some of them married, and twenty four of them have their hearts in urns. So fascinating! Continuing to collect lovely moments and seize the day!
An hour train ride from Vienna, Bratislava made for a fun lunch adventure. A small old town, some history/religion, and a bit of whimsy.
Prague...my first eastern European city...interstingly different. History (double eagles from Hapsburg rule), left over communist feeling, lovely views, charming cobblestoned paths, a bit of tourist kitsch, all made for a beautiful visit and a sense of "pohoda" - the Czech word for well being.
